I would be willing to pay significantly higher federal taxes if it guarantees the Liberals lose the next election.

Carbon taxes would be palatable if they did them equally across the board. As it stands those most effected by them are those who have no alternative but to pay them and they pay the majority of the cost. The farmers are the hardest hit of all and the Trudeau Government has failed them miserably which in the end has caused a divide, not just between Liberal and Conservative areas, but between large cities and rural areas. Causing division seems to be the ultimate goal as there appears no compromise for those the hardest hit by the taxation. If there would be a reduction in other taxes to accommodate and equal the playing field perhaps it would be digestible for many. Personally there are better ways to reduce emissions other than to continually raise taxes. We are in the worst recession of our times to which most people are ignoring and to begin trying to recoup our economy and the many lost jobs should be paramount. Spending billions more for green projects that will only bring temporary work is ludicrous. We need sustainable jobs and a sustainable economy. With the progressives globalization plans for infrastructure it would appear that the majority may be global players who will be getting the contracts to build infrastructure. This is of little benefit to Canadian's as they will be back stopping the building of the infrastructure and covering the over costs or any failings of the contractor with taxpayers money. After the infrastructure is built the global contractor receives the benefits as we will be charged to use the infrastructure that they build. So to add insult to injury this is added on to the costs to Canadians. If there is a need right now its to focus on getting our economy running and trying to build long term sustainability for jobs. Is climate change important, absolutely but we need a less punitive tax. I do not think many Canadians seem to be even aware we have a massive deficit and a crumbling economy with many of our small business claiming bankruptcy. Starting up the economy while adding high taxation to producers does not promote jobs or growth. With the increase in the CPP contributions to Canadians and their employers as well as other taxation there is little to encourage growth or promote new jobs or industry unless they are financed by taxpayers money. This means all the liability lies on the taxpayers and not those making the massive amounts of money building infrastructure. I think the focus should be on economic stability and we can then worry about adding on higher and higher taxation in an equitable way across the board to all Canadians for the sake of lowering emissions.

As a climate voter, it'd be awesome to have a political consensus on carbon pricing as the most cost-effective way to switch from fossil fuels to carbon-free energy. Guess we'll see whether O'Toole is flexible enough to carry out this kind of U-turn.
