A nice succinct write up about Canada for me. As child of immigrants who came here with nothing, my family did really well growing up in Toronto in the 70s/80s. My sister and I are not millionaires but we are happy fulfilled individuals also enjoying a material comfortable life. My parents left an economic and political hell hole and I am so glad they came here. For sure there was some bigotry on top of the regular in-group / out group BS every kid goes through to varying degrees. It could have been better, but it could also be a lot worse. The whole manichean CANADA IS A HELL HOLE or CANADA IS UTOPIA gets us nowhere in the end. We have problems to fix. Lets work on whats really there.

Hey, you don't get to crap on Freeland for performing covid limiting behaviour, AND crap on Jason Kenney for failing to do so.

I didn't hear one word of criticism of Kenney that dared to claim his sky lunch was actually dangerous. Half a dozen guys sitting around a 2.5m table, outdoors, those within arm's-length not facing each other, and the lot of them vaccinated? There was no real risk at all. But a peformance of obedience to the law was expected, because leaders should lead in obedience to the law, and Caesar's Wife must be seen to be good, not just be good.

If Kenney was bad, then Freeland was good. Performing expected actions is part of the job of leadership.

Thank you. Would that we would devote as much effort to boring projects like timely vaccine procurement that could have spared us the third wave as we devote to performative apologies..
