What Canadians care about, as shown during elections, is what cradle to grave benefits government can deliver directly to people right now. Universal free health care, free schools, free seniors benefits (including OAS), and now free daycare. Hand to mouth.

When it comes to infrastructure and disaster response, let alone fiscal and foreign policy the voters don't care nearly as much therefore it isn't a priority for their representatives. The provincial government just serves their client base wants.

If you want change, the change in priorities must come from the voters, and it must come specifically on voting day, otherwise is embarrassing level of emergency response will continue.

I rarely share new stories on Facebook but I did share this one. What a sad and maddening epic failure by Canadian authorities. Thank you for writing this

I sometimes struggle to decide if the BC government is shockingly cynical or breathtakingly naïve. Fuel rationing is an example: the government announced this policy days after there was a rush on gas in Victoria. When they finally did announce a policy, it seemed to be poorly conceived and easily circumvented. The government said they expected people to act reasonably and pitch in for the greater good, and had no plans for enforcement. Was this the naïve belief in human altruism that defeats so many left wing projects? Or was it a belated attempt to respond to a problem in Victoria that directly impacted the lives of the provincial politicians? At any rate, it seems to have precipitated a panic in the Lower Mainland that led to huge lines and shortages at gas stations this weekend. Well done, all.

We have this army that just trains endlessly in case a war happens, and have been doing so since nuclear weapons essentially obsoleted their profession 3 generations ago, aside from "wars" where everybody agrees to not go to Total War.

Why NOT a force that just trains endlessly for the day when the earthquake comes, and in the meantime, practices with minor little disasters like floods?

We drop $20B per year on the military.
